FAQ: Is it illegal to deface money? U.S. Code, Title 18; Part I; Chapter 17; Section 331 only "the fraudulent alteration of US coins is illegal". For example: changing the date or mintmark of a coin to make it more valuable to coin collectors or changing the denomination (cutting cents down to the size of dimes to use in vending machines). It can also mean filing or cutting the edges of gold or silver coins to cheat on the weight and value of a coin. Almost everyone has gone to a zoo, amusement park or tourist attraction and put a penny in a machine that rolls out the penny and stamps a design on to it. These machines would not be around if it were illegal. Once the coins are defaced they are no longer currency and cannot be used as such.
